For about a year I drove every car in iRacing on the default setup and told myself that setup was an advanced topic I would get to later. What I actually believed, without ever saying it out loud, was that setup was a way for fast people to be faster, and that since I was mid-pack the problem was me or my rig. So I upgraded the rig. The wheelbase went to a MOZA R9, the pedals went to a CRP2 load cell, and both of those were genuinely good decisions that made me more consistent. Neither of them fixed the thing where my car understeered into every long right-hander at Road America and I just drove around it.

The fix was free and it took an evening. Not learning setup — I still do not build setups from scratch and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Learning to read the tyre temperature readout, and then changing exactly one thing at a time in response to it. That is a much smaller skill than it sounds, it transfers to every car in the service, and it is the single highest-return hour of practice I have spent.

What the readout is actually telling you

Pull into the pits and iRacing shows you tyre temperatures across the tread of each tyre — the inside, the middle and the outside. That is the whole mechanism. Three numbers per corner, taken from your last lap, and the relationship between them is a description of how the tyre is sitting on the road when it is loaded.

The thing that took me embarrassingly long to internalise is that the absolute numbers are almost never the point at first. It is the shape across the three that carries the information. A tyre where the inside is much hotter than the outside is spending its working life leaning on its inside edge. A tyre where the middle is hotter than both edges is bulging in the centre, which is a pressure story. A tyre that is broadly even across the tread is doing its job, and if it is still not gripping, the problem lives somewhere else — usually in what I am doing with the brake pedal.

Compare left side to right side too, because on an oval or a track with a dominant direction of corner, one side does most of the work and its numbers will run hotter. That is expected, not a fault.

The three shapes and what to do about each

Almost everything a mid-pack driver needs sits inside these three patterns.

Hot in the middle, cool at both edges

The tyre is over-inflated for how you are driving it. The centre of the tread is carrying load the edges should be sharing. Come down on pressure in small steps and re-run. This is the easiest one to fix and the most common one on a default setup, because defaults are built conservatively and a lot of us drive below the pace the default assumes.

Hot at both edges, cool in the middle

The opposite — under-inflated, tread flexing away in the centre. Add pressure in the same small steps. In practice I hit this one far less often than the first, and when I did it was usually because I had over-corrected from the first one in a single big jump.

Hot on one edge only

This is the camber conversation, and it is the one that actually made my long right-handers work. If the inside edge is running much hotter than the outside on the tyres doing the work, the wheel is leaning in more than it needs to for the loads you are generating. If the outside edge is the hot one, the opposite. Adjust camber a small amount toward evening the two out, and re-run.

The one rule

Change one value, run at least three or four representative laps, and look again. Changing pressure and camber together and then trying to reason about the result is how an evening disappears with no learning in it. I have done this more than once and the honest outcome is that you end up further from the default than you started and cannot say why.

Why three or four laps and not one

One lap out of the pits is a cold tyre and it will lie to you. The numbers you want are from a tyre that has come up to its working range and stayed there for a bit. I run out, use the first lap to get heat in, then treat the following laps as the sample — and I try to drive them at a similar pace rather than pushing progressively harder, because a lap where I overdrove one corner shows up in the temps and I will happily misread it as a setup problem.

This is also where the rig starts helping rather than being the excuse. A direct-drive wheelbase gives you enough detail to feel the front tyre give up before the temps confirm it, which means you start predicting what the readout will say. When your prediction and the readout agree, you have learned something. If your force feedback is not telling you that much, that is worth fixing first — I wrote up how I set mine in this piece on iRacing force feedback, and it matters more than any camber value.

The order I go in now

  1. Drive the default setup for a few sessions until I am lapping consistently. If my laps are scattered, the temps are describing my inconsistency and not the car.
  2. Check pressures first — the middle-versus-edges shape. Get that roughly even before touching anything else, because pressure changes affect everything downstream.
  3. Then camber, one axle at a time, aiming to even out the inside-versus-outside split on whichever end is misbehaving.
  4. Then, and only then, think about brake bias, which is less a setup value than a driving preference and which I move in tiny amounts based on whether the rear steps out under braking.
  5. Save it as a named setup for that car and track, and stop. The temptation to keep going is strong and the returns fall off a cliff.

What this does not fix

It is worth being clear about the limit here, because the setup rabbit hole is deep and mostly not where mid-pack time lives. Reading temps will not fix a corner you are entering ~5 km/h too fast and then correcting all the way through. It will not fix braking that arrives in a single stab rather than a squeeze — that one is a pedal skill and, if your pedals are potentiometer-based, partly a hardware one, which is the argument in the pedals piece. And it will absolutely not fix racecraft, which is the majority of what separates the middle of a field from the front.

What it does fix is the specific, maddening situation where the car will not do what you are asking and you cannot tell whether that is the car or you. Once the temps are even, that ambiguity is gone. Whatever is left is you, and knowing that is genuinely liberating rather than depressing — it puts every remaining hour of practice somewhere it will pay.

The honest summary

I still download setups for the series I race seriously, because building a good one is a real discipline and I am not going to out-work people who enjoy it. But I no longer run anything blind. I take the setup out, look at the temps, and if the shape is wrong for how I drive I move one value and look again. That is the whole practice, it costs nothing, and it did more for my pace than the money I spent on hardware in the same period — which, given how much I have written on this site about hardware, is not a comfortable thing to admit.

Do I need to build my own iRacing setup from scratch?

No, and most drivers never should. Downloading a well-regarded setup for your car and series is fine. The skill worth having is reading the tyre temperatures it produces for your driving style and adjusting one or two values, rather than running any setup blind.

How many laps should I run before reading tyre temps?

Give the tyres at least one lap to come up to temperature and then run three or four laps at a consistent pace before looking. Temperatures from a single out-lap are from a cold tyre and will point you in the wrong direction.

Should I change tyre pressure or camber first?

Pressure first. It is the simpler relationship — hot centre means come down, hot edges mean go up — and it affects how the tyre sits on the road, so camber changes made before pressure is sorted have to be redone anyway. Change one value at a time either way.

Will a better wheelbase or pedals help me read the car more than setup work will?

They help differently. Good force feedback and a load-cell brake make the car easier to feel and to repeat, which is what lets you produce a consistent lap worth measuring. Setup work then tells you what that consistent lap is doing to the tyres. Hardware without the reading skill left me guessing for about a year.
