I run all of this from a fixed-aluminium-extrusion cockpit with a ~MOZA R9 direct drive wheelbase and ~MOZA CRP2 load-cell pedals — no motion, no fancy paint, just a rig built to be honest about what the car is doing. This week it's Suzuka — one of the tracks I keep coming back to on iRacing, and one where the corner-by-corner details matter more than most. I've raced enough laps here across enough car classes that I've stopped thinking of it as one lap and started thinking of it as a handful of separate problems strung together, which is honestly how I'd recommend approaching any new track once you're past the total-beginner stage.

None of what follows is a substitute for laps. iRacing's tire model and each car's balance shift enough between builds and seasons that exact setup numbers go stale fast — what doesn't go stale is which corners at Suzuka punish which mistakes, and that's what I'm actually trying to hand off here.

Layout at a glance

Before I get into setup or technique, it's worth walking the layout once with fresh eyes, because most of the time lost at a new track comes from not knowing what's coming next rather than from any actual driving mistake.

I'd genuinely recommend doing a slow, no-pressure lap or two just looking around before pushing for pace — glance at the runoff, the curbing, and where the track actually widens versus where it only looks like it does. A surprising amount of confidence at Suzuka comes from simply knowing the track's shape well enough that you're not making decisions on the fly anymore.

Where I set up the car differently here

My starting point for Suzuka is never a totally clean-sheet setup — I take whatever baseline I'm running that week for the car class and adjust from there based on what this specific layout demands.

I'd treat all of this as a starting point rather than a final answer. Setup work on iRacing rewards small, deliberate changes tested one at a time far more than it rewards big swings based on a feeling — change one thing, run a handful of laps, and actually compare lap times and how the car felt rather than just going on instinct.

A practice session plan that actually works

  1. Run three or four laps at a moderate pace just to build a mental map of the corners before pushing for time
  2. Push for a genuinely fast lap once the tires and track feel warmed in, and note exactly where you felt like you left time on the table
  3. Adjust one setup parameter based on that feeling, then run another push lap to see if it actually helped
  4. Finish with a longer run at race pace rather than qualifying pace, since that's closer to what you'll actually need on race day

Force feedback notes

The Esses ask the ~MOZA R9 to communicate small, rapid weight transfers rather than one big event — this is a track where I actually notice fatigue in my forearms if the FFB gain is set too aggressively.

I mention wheel feel specifically because Suzuka is a good example of how much a track's character can change what a 'good' FFB setting even means. A profile that feels great somewhere flat and smooth can feel either numb or harsh somewhere with real elevation change or bumps, and this track is one where I've had to actually revisit my base settings rather than assume they'd transfer.

Pro Tip

Break the Esses into three or four smaller sections in your head rather than trying to nail the whole sequence at once — it's much easier to build consistency corner-section by corner-section.

Mistakes I still see (and sometimes still make)

What all of these mistakes have in common is that they're habits carried over from somewhere else — a different track, a different car, a different session — rather than something specific to Suzuka itself. The fix isn't usually a dramatic technique change, it's just deliberately unlearning the habit that doesn't apply here.

Race craft specifically at this track

Single-lap pace and race pace at Suzuka aren't the same skill, and I'd be doing you a disservice if I only talked about qualifying laps. In traffic, the corners that felt straightforward in isolation often play out completely differently — a car ahead braking a fraction earlier than you expected, or a car alongside taking away the line you were planning to use. I try to build in a little more margin at the corners I've flagged above specifically because that's where a first-lap mistake compounds into an actual incident rather than just a slow lap.

None of this replaces seat time — track knowledge on iRacing comes from laps, not from reading about them. But knowing where the trouble spots are before you find them the hard way saves a few incident points along the way.
