Early in a session, the surface is treacherous; mid-session, it's often fastest; at the end, it can be slick again.
Your car is light, powerful, and sensitive to every input. Base Setup: Where to Start

I run higher brake pressure on dirt (~650–700 kPa on my CRP2 load-cell pedals) because the surface is less consistent. Throttle Control: On or Off
On dirt, there's no middle ground. When I was learning, I tried to be progressive—gentle throttle application like I do on my road course setups. Result: wheelspin, then a dead engine, then a spin. Dirt prefers binary throttle: you're either building speed (full throttle when traction allows) or managing it (off throttle or light trail braking). This is the biggest mental shift from road racing.
In the middle of a corner, I'm not rolling throttle smoothly—I'm either full throttle or completely off. The car is either accelerating or being slowed by engine braking. There's a brief moment when both wheels have grip, and I plant the throttle hard. Braking and Turn-In
Brake late and hard. Turn-in happens while I'm still on the brakes—this is a key difference from road racing. On pavement, I brake, then turn. On dirt, I brake deep into the corner, release brakes decisively as I start turn-in, and let the car settle into the line. This aggressive braking allows me to carry more entry speed.
Turn-in is sharp but controlled. I don't roll the steering wheel; I rotate it with intent, then immediately start unwind as the car rotates. Mid-Corner and Exit

I steer into the slide slightly—if the rear is sliding right, I let the steering wheel come right a bit more, then unwind as the car rotates. It feels chaotic, but it's controlled chaos.
Exit is power application. When I feel the front wheels have traction (the steering loads up slightly as the car rotates out), I add throttle aggressively. This isn't a gradual increase; it's a transition from brake-or-coast to full throttle. The car will drift; I manage that drift by steering.

Early in a session, the high line (outside) is often faster because it's cleaner and hasn't rubbed in. As the session ages, the low line (inside) may become faster as rubber builds up. Watch replays of faster drivers and notice where they're positioned relative to the banking. That's often the grip line.
Practice one lap without worrying about time. Focus on managing the car's loose behavior and learning the throttle transition points. Consistency and confidence come before speed.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Smooth throttle application — causes wheelspin or understeer; commit to full throttle when traction allows
- Braking too early or too gently — sacrifices mid-corner speed; brake hard and release decisively
- Counter-steering to fight oversteer — increases spin risk; steer into the rotation and add throttle to slow the slide
- Lifting mid-corner — causes the car to grip suddenly and spin; stay committed or ease to coast, don't abruptly lift
- Adjusting setup every lap — mask your real rate of improvement; do 5-10 laps before changing anything, then adjust one thing at a time
Practice Progression
Start in practice mode alone. Run ~20 laps to get a feel for the car and track. Your lap times will improve significantly as you learn the throttle application and line. Once you're consistent (lap times within 0.5 seconds of each other), move to qualifying or a race.
In your first races, focus on finishing. Dirt racing has contact and chaos; the goal is to stay on track and learn racecraft. As you gain confidence, you'll naturally find more grip and speed. Most beginners are 2–3 seconds per lap faster in week 5 than in week 1, simply from repeated exposure and better throttle management.
