For my first few months in iRacing I treated brake bias as a number that belonged to setup builders. I would load a fixed setup, never touch the in-car adjustment, and blame myself every time the fronts locked into Turn 1 at Road America. It was only when I started logging where I was losing time on my ~MOZA R9 and ~MOZA CRP2 rig that I realised a good chunk of it was not technique at all — it was a brake balance that suited the setup author's driving style, not mine. This is the guide I wish I had read back then.

What brake bias actually is

Brake bias is how the braking force is split between the front and rear axles. In iRacing it is usually displayed as the share going to the front — so a higher number means more front braking, a lower number means more rear braking. The exact range and step size vary from car to car, and some cars let you change it from the cockpit while others only allow it in the garage.

When you brake hard, weight transfers forward. The front tyres gain grip and the rears lose it, which is why almost every car runs a front-heavy bias. The goal is not to find a magic number. The goal is to put the limit of both axles as close together as possible, so neither end locks first under the kind of braking you actually do.

How too much front bias feels

With too much front bias, the front tyres lock before the rears have done their share of the work. On the wheel this shows up as a sudden lightening of the force feedback as the fronts stop rotating, followed by the car pushing straight on when you try to turn in. You can see the flat-spot smoke from the cockpit in some cars, but the steering going light is usually the first warning.

The car feels safe and stable, which is exactly why it is easy to leave bias too far forward. You are giving away entry rotation and braking distance, and you often end up releasing the brake early to get the nose to turn, which costs more time than the lockup itself.

How too much rear bias feels

Move the bias too far back and the rear axle locks first. This is the one that bites. The rear goes light and starts to step out under braking, most noticeably when you brake with a little steering lock or over a bump. Through a load cell pedal it can feel like the car is rotating nicely right up to the moment it does not. In higher-downforce cars, the effect changes with speed because the aero load changes with speed, so a bias that feels fine at the end of a short straight can be nervous at the end of a long one.

Pro Tip

Change bias in small steps and do at least three laps between changes. One lap is not a sample — the track, fuel load and your own consistency all move more than a single click does.

Why your pedal matters more than the setup sheet

A load cell pedal measures force, not travel, which makes it much easier to brake to the same pressure every time. That consistency is what makes bias tuning meaningful. On a potentiometer pedal your peak pressure varies lap to lap, so you end up chasing lockups that were really just inconsistent inputs. If you have not calibrated your brake yet, do that first — I wrote up my process in MOZA CRP2 brake calibration and pressure curves. Tuning bias on an uncalibrated pedal is tuning noise.

It is also worth being honest about how you brake. A driver who stamps the pedal hard and releases it in one motion loads the front axle quickly and tends to tolerate more rearward bias. A driver who trails the brake deep into the corner is asking the front tyres to brake and turn at the same time, and usually needs a bias that keeps the rear stable while the steering is loaded. A simple method for finding your bias

  1. Start from the car's default or a trusted baseline setup, with your pedal already calibrated.
  2. Pick one heavy braking zone you can repeat, ideally a straight-line stop into a slow corner.
  3. Do three or four laps and note what locks first, if anything, and where in the braking zone it happens.
  4. If the fronts lock or the car refuses to turn in, move the bias a small step rearward. If the rear steps out, move it a small step forward.
  5. Repeat until the car stops in a straight line without either end locking, then check it in a braking zone with some steering lock.
  6. Write the value down per car and per track. It will not transfer perfectly, but it gives you a far better starting point next time.

Reading the replay before you touch the number

Before changing anything, watch the replay of a braking zone from the chase camera and the cockpit camera. A front lockup shows as the car carrying straight on with the nose not responding; a rear lockup shows as the tail moving out while the steering is still close to straight. It sounds obvious, but in the moment it is very easy to misread one for the other — especially on triples or in VR, where your sense of the car's yaw is weaker than in real life. Two minutes of replay can save twenty laps of guessing in the wrong direction.

Adjusting bias during a race

In cars that allow in-car adjustment, bias is one of the most useful controls you have, and in iRacing those in-car adjustments generally remain available even in fixed-setup series. As fuel burns off, the car gets lighter and the balance shifts; as tyres wear, their grip changes too. Many drivers move bias gradually over a stint rather than setting it once. Some drivers also move bias between corners — more rearward for a slow hairpin where rotation matters, more forward for a high-speed braking zone where stability matters more. That can work, but it adds workload. I would only start doing it once your braking points are consistent, otherwise you are adding a variable to a problem you have not isolated.

Brake bias and ABS cars

In cars with ABS, such as many GT3 and GT4 machines, the system manages lockups for you, so bias feels different. You will not get the classic flat-spotted front, but a poor bias still shows up as ABS intervening too early on one axle, longer stopping distances and a car that will not rotate on entry. The same logic applies: watch which end the car is fighting, not only whether the wheels lock. If you are choosing between those classes, GT3 vs GT4 is a good place to start.

The mistake to avoid

The most common mistake I see — and made — is using bias to fix a braking technique problem. If you lock the fronts because you are braking too late and too hard, moving bias rearward will stop the lockup and create a nervous rear instead. Get your braking point and pressure consistent first, then tune bias to match. Done in that order, bias becomes one of the cheapest lap time gains in the sim: it costs nothing but a few focused laps.
