In iRacing, the Skip Barber, Mazda MX-5 Cup, and most vintage or road-racing cars use H-pattern. If you want to race these series seriously, an H-pattern shifter is the way to go. The downside: it's slower to shift, requires you to learn the gate, and it's completely different from sequential muscle memory. If I raced the MX-5 Cup league every week, I'd invest in a separate H-pattern shifter just to own that muscle memory.

Paddle Shifters

Paddle shifters (left and right lever on the back of your wheel rim) are the modern default. They're sequential—left paddle upshifts, right downshifts, or vice versa depending on your mapping. They're fast, require no dedicated hardware, and work on any wheel. Most modern GT3 cars (Ferrari 488, BMW M4, McLaren 720S, Audi R8) use paddles, and so do most modern road cars iRacing includes.

On the MOZA R9 with the CS V2 rim I use, paddle shifting is instant and feels right for modern cars. There's almost no penalty compared to a sequential lever, and the learning curve is near-zero if you've ever played a racing game.

Practical Comparison: What I Actually Do

Here's how I decide: I map my shifts to buttons on my MOZA CS V2 rim and let my series choice dictate the muscle memory. Indycars, formula, and modern GT3? Button shifts near my thumbs—quick, reliable, no drama. Skip Barber or MX-5? I'd grab an H-pattern shifter if I was doing a league. Sequential shifters are rarer as standalone hardware anymore because most modern cars and wheels already have paddles built in. If you're looking at a dedicated rig upgrade, you're more likely to invest in load-cell brake pedals like my MOZA CRP2 or a solid cockpit than a new shifter. The bang-for-buck is much better there.

Which Series Demand What

  1. Single-seaters (Dallara IR18, F4, Formula Vee): Sequential or paddle. Button mapping works fine.
  2. Sports cars (Porsche 911 Cup, Ferrari 296 Challenge): Sequential or paddle. Most can be driven either way.
  3. GT3 (all modern variants): Paddles. That's how they shift. Button mapping is the common workaround.
  4. Skip Barber & Mazda MX-5 Cup: H-pattern strongly preferred. Manual transmissions demand the gate.
  5. Vintage/Historic (Lotus 79, etc.): H-pattern, if available. These are authenticity-focused series.
  6. NASCAR (Cup Next-Gen): Sequential or paddle. No shifter needed if you use a button.
Testing Strategy

Test before you invest. Load up a few practice sessions in your target series and use button mapping for a week. If you're competitive and comfortable, save your money. Only buy a shifter if you genuinely miss the hardware.

My Honest Take

If I had to start from scratch today, I'd skip the standalone shifter entirely. I'd buy the best wheel I could afford (like the MOZA R9 I use now), map my shifts to the rim buttons, and spend the money I saved on better pedals or a more rigid cockpit. Those two upgrades will improve your lap times far more than owning a dedicated H-pattern shifter.

The exception: if you're joining a Skip Barber league or racing MX-5 competitively in a league setting, grab an H-pattern shifter. Your pace will improve measurably, and your muscle memory won't fight you every session. But for open-setup iRacing and casual multi-series racing, buttons are plenty fast enough.

The best shifter is the one that doesn't distract you from driving. For me, that's button mapping. For someone else running Skip Barber league every week, it's an H-pattern gate. Neither is wrong—they're just answers to different questions.
